The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE) aims to minimise the impact of the electrical and electronic equipment on the environment during its lifetimes and when it becomes end of life.

It applies to a huge spectrum of products. 'Not Just Computers'
It encourages and sets criteria for collection, treatment, redistribution and end of life.
It makes producers of waste responsible for financing these activities.
It can not be processed at its end of life into Land Fill by business or the consumer.
At the EU level WEEE has been identified as a priority Waste Stream.

The three reasons for this are:

1.The amount of WEEE generated in the community is growing rapidly.
2.Hazardous components in electrical equipment is a major environmental concern.
